The Border Violence Monitoring Network just published it’s monthly update, covering the pushback of 128 people in December, adding to the thousands who have already faced brutal collective expulsions during 2019. Monitoring work identified consistent police violence, alongside deepening trends specific to the winter conditions on the Balkan Route. The report covers pushbacks from Croatia to Bosnia-Herzegovina, and from Greece to Turkey.

This report analyses, among other things:

    • Pushback statistics from 2019
    • Recurrent dog attacks
    • Denial of emergency medical care
    • Transport controls and racial profiling
    • Developments on the Greek-Turkish border

Alongside these trends, the publication looks at major incidents from December, including the eviction of Vučjak camp in Bosnia-Herzegovina, transit deaths at Croatia’s eastern border and renewed movement in the north of Serbia. The sum of these events showed how the EU’s external border continued to mediate it’s actions through violence and illegality on the eve of 2020.
