At approximately 6 am on Thursday 10th February 2022, a group of ten men was apprehended by Croatian police. The transit group was comprised of people from Afghanistan and Pakistan. They had crossed the border from Bosnia and traveled ten minutes by car before being stopped. The group has mixed ages, ranging from 27 to 45 years old.
The group was stopped by a group of officers which he identified as Croatian police, based on their uniforms. The respondent explained that the police confiscated all their personal property. This included their bags and contents, including smartphones. The respondent said the police did not give these items back.
The group asked the authorities for asylum. The police appeared to cooperate and accept their asylum claim. ‘But they didn’t give, they cheat us’, the respondent said, ‘we’re giving you stay, they said, but they didn’t give us. They deport us’.
The respondent described the police as wearing dark blue uniforms. There were 7 police officers. This suggests Granicna Policija (Border Police) or the Croatian Intervention Police. The police were alleged as driving two unmarked civilian vehicles. The respondent described how the same police were present during the actual pushback over the border to Bosnia.
